Little Bit Edgy

My friend Zach Arrington is also my co-worker here at American Money Team. [In addition, he fronts a soulful rock band called Elroy.] He’s got a good head on his shoulders, and he had the wherewithal to capture some poetry during one of our recent, long, pat-yourselves-on-the-back company meetings. I just sat there.

Here are some phrases he jotted down in the order in which they echoed through the room:

Maturing as an organization

The long term

A New Alliance

The middle phase

It’s a big priority

Tools and resources

Current value proposition

Prepare ourselves for the future

A victim of our own success

It’s a great opportunity

5% ahead of plan

The money we make on the money

The volatility of the market

Free T-shirt

How do we get the next billion?

Rough parameters

These guys are proactively making calls

Leaders within the distribution

A good sense of humor

Trillions and trillions of dollars

We’re gonna be different

Niche strategies

Deliver on those promises

A little bit edgy

Retiring baby boomers

Collective feedback

We had that word “progress…”

270 Day Tech Blast

Adoption and Integration and Optimization

“You’re crazy – No!”

Cookies and Kool-Aid session

The heart of our operations

Broad and complex initiatives

A smart plan

There is always change

Thanks, Zach!

New Music Monday

I recorded a little tune for my baby’s birthday. It made its world premiere for an audience of one over the weekend, so you can listen to it now.

It’s called “Usually,” and it’s about our adult relationship, you see. Were I in high school, I might have written a love song called “Always and Forever Saccharine,” but now I’m thirty years old, and I know that true love is more about “Usually.”

Thank god.

Always” love makes me want to gag, which is why I’m a cat person, not a dog person.

I am definitely a Maggie person, and this song is for her. She likes it when I rap.

USUALLY

My baby’s fond of animals
My baby’s fond of me

Usually

I’ve got a little bit of time in between events
And she’s got a little bit of time in between events
It’s times like these we have the best times
Yes, it’s times like these we have the best times

Usually

She fills a great big room
With her itty-bitty body
A dancer, a hotty
But modern, not naughty
She drinks iced toddy
On her cruise ta Houston
The town we used ta roost in
I lose my blues by booze in

But she’s a Wilhite
Keeps her ass tight
And her teeth white
And if I act right
She’ll stay the night…

Usually

She don’t like whiskey
She likes iced tea with Grey Goose
She don’t like whiskey
She’ll take a dirty martini or two

You say it’s your birthday
If you’ll allow me to opine
I hope that it’s happy
I think you’ll enjoy 29

And many more…

Rural Yankee Chick

It’s Friday, and I’m glad to take it easy this morning.

I recorded Mr. Dylan‘s Girl from the North Country last year for Maggie‘s birthday, and I’d like to share it again today. It sounds like autumn!

Girl from the North Country

Well, if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she’s wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin’ winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That’s the way I remember her best.

I’m a-wonderin’ if she remembers me at all.
Many times I’ve often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Happy Birthday to my Baby!

Sweet Maggie is catching up with me, folks. She’s only 1.5 years behind me and gaining. In honor of her birthday, I hereby post the lyrics to “our” song.

But first, a little self-promotion: Austinites, come on down to my SOLO performance at Flipnotics @ the Triangle tonight! 8 pm. I’m giving away a desk lamp!

And now, for my darlin’:

Would you dance if asked you to dance
Would you run and never look back
Would you cry if you saw me crying
Would you save my soul tonight

Would you tremble if I touched your lips
Would you laugh oh please tell me this
Now would you die for the one you love
Hold me in your arms tonight

I can be your hero baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away

Ohhh I just wanna hold you, I just
wanna hold you, oh yeah
My angel be have I lost my mind
I don’t care your here tonight

I can be your hero.
