Final Thursday @ Flipnotics!

Feb 24th, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | one comment »

Friends, it truly is the end of an era this week, as Matt the Electrician and I end our run at Flipnotics @ the Triangle. For the foreseeable future, at least. Sorry to announce it so suddenly and with so few curse words. I can’t go into details, because they involve a dangerous global conspiracy and an embarrassing caffeine addiction.

Matt and I will take a short break, then we’ll reconvene regularly with that same old magic. I’ll let you know when and where in the coming weeks. We had a great year-and-a-half, and we’ll both miss it, I’m sure. Come celebrate the end with us.

I’m also finishing up my month of Fridays at Café Caffeine this week. I had a fine time kicking off the weekend with solo show, and I’m certain I’ll be back on that stage real soon. Come see me Friday at 7 pm.

In more shocking news, the song title this week is “Velvety Velvety Velvet.”

In even more shocking news, I now have a Facebook page right here. Become a fan, and don’t make fun of me.

Don’t forget the next performance of Spike Gillespie’s Dick Monologues on Wednesday, March 11. E-mail spike@spikeg.com for reservations.

That’s all for this crazy week. Thanks for reading!

More Shows 4 U!

Feb 19th, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | one comment »

I would love someday for my chest to stick out further than my stomach. I suppose this is the dream of most humans.

Say, for instance, I ran face first into a wall.
In a ideal world, what would I like to strike the wall first?

First, I’d go with my gold-plated Lexus. It’d be a shame to ram it into a wall, but this is an ideal world, so I can afford 3 replacements.

But let’s say I’m not riding around town in style. I’m just walking. I suppose my big toe should hit the wall first, as unpleasant as that seems. Then my nose, also a painful striking point.

After my foot and face, though, what next? This is the question of the day.

Currently, I’m afraid my belly would make contact before my nipples. I would like to change this. I have two options.

One: Make my chest larger. This requires lifting weights and devouring protein, both of which I enjoy somewhat.

Two: Make my stomach smaller. This involves aerobic activity and eating sensibly, which I don’t enjoy all that much.

Of course, there is a third option. Hypothetically, if I play as many successful shows as I can, my chest will swell with pride and I’ll burn more calories just jammin’! Yes I like this one the best.
Come on out and support my shape-shifting efforts!

That’s Thursday night with Matt the Electrician, where our song title of the week is “One Horse Race”:

Lots of Shows and a Little Press

Feb 13th, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | no comment »

Tonight, after appearing at Café Caffeine, I will have played my 7th show in 9 days. I don’t know how it happened, but the performances ended up on my calendar in a bundle, so I worked ‘em like a champ. I also worked this dang day job.

My guitar and trusty toolbox just sit in my entryway between commitments. They don’t even make it to their room. I’m a little tired, but I do enjoy the momentum and activity. They’ve all been fun shows in front of lots of folks who have never seen me before, so I can’t complain.

I got a little bit of press when I opened for the wonderfully salty Fred Eaglesmith at the Cactus Café Wednesday night. Brian T. Atkinson at The Austin-American Statesman calls it “an inspired pairing,” and Jim Caligiuri at the Austin Chronicle includes a They Might Be Giants comparison in his write-up. I’ll never tire of knowledgeable music fans linking me to my heroes.

Speaking of heroes, I spoke with Griff at the Cactus, fresh off his excellent cover story in the Chronicle (also by Caligiuri). We decided to try another Songwriter Tribute to Bruce Springsteen on Monday, April 6, 2009. That’s the day after his concert here. It’ll be a benefit for the Capital Area Food Bank and a sort of birthday present for yours truly. Mark your calendars, as it will be a wonderful supplement to seeing the Boss live.

Again, I apologize for not updating this here site more often. I’m still working on making it a great place for newcomers as well as long-time Southpaw supporters. I’ve added some videos, improved my concert calendar, and folded the Press page into the About page. Isn’t that wildly interesting? My next step is overhauling the Music page for maximum information and pleasure.

Speaking of pleasure, happy Friday! Have a superb Valentine’s Day or enjoy despising it, whichever floats your jolly boat in peachy water. I love a girl named Maggie, but who wants to read about love on the ethernets?

Busy Boy

Feb 5th, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | no comment »

February is an active month for yours truly. I’ll play loads of shows in cool rooms with cool people while it’s somewhat cool outside. The shortest month will be over before you know it, so enjoy some live music before March hits and you suddenly get all outdoorsy.

Tonight, as is tradition, Matt the Electrician and I will perform at Flipnotics @ the Triangle. The song title of the week is “Drawing Conclusions.”

Tomorrow, Friday, I’ll return to the wonderful 78704 and Café Caffeine, now owned by my friend and yours, Les McGehee. Les plans to help the Café reach its full potential. I hear rumors of free wine tasting during the show. There’s a new stage and sound system, and I intend to take full advantage with a solo performance. Come on out at 7 pm!

Saturday, I’ll participate in Stool Pigeon at Coldtowne Theater, the improv capital of Austin. Actually, I AM the stool pigeon. I’ll tell a few stories (on a stool), and a wonderful team of players will follow each tale with unpredictable comedy. It will surely be a one-of-a-kind night, and if you haven’t visited the space, this is your chance to witness a whole other side of the creative scene.

Next Tuesday, I’ll return to the Cactus Café to join a fleet of young local talent. Graham Weber, Dana Falconberry, Leatherbag, Betty Soo, and I will all play sets in my favorite listening room. If you haven’t seen all these folks, you can make a big dent in your live music checklist on this one night. What’s that sound like? Fun.

Check out all the details below or at http://southpawjones.com/shows/.

Come see me,
Southpaw
