Uppers, Downers, and Monologues

Here it is Thursday, and I don’t feel pressured to finish a song by 7:58 pm. I’m not worried about what I’m going to wear or what ex-girlfriends I’ll see tonight. Matt the Electrician and I are not performing at Flipnotics @ the Triangle! It hasn’t fully sunk in yet, but I’m just going to have to get used to the idea. We had a good run up there, and we had an absolutely fabulous final show last week. Thanks to everyone who came out and tipped and held hands.

I suppose I’ll spend tonight watching Must See TV like a normal person. I’ve wanted to catch up with ol’ Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer for quite some time. Rest assured, Matt and I have a plan in place to reintroduce our weekly powers, and we’ll have a couple of shows this month so you don’t forget about us.

Speaking of shows, I have three unique ones this week. Friday, I’ll return to the better-than-ever Café Caffeine for to cap off a night of words and music, mostly words. Mr. Owen Egerton hosts six writers (Ric Williams, Gary Kent, Smith Henderson, Amelia Gray, Josh Morison, Elyse Fenton) reading from their published and soon-to-be published works. Jenny and the Corn Ponies will start the night off with alt-country sounds at 7 pm, and I’ll follow the readings with a solo set around 9. Viva culture and stimulants!

As I was saying earlier, Matt the Electrician and I are reuniting after all this time to perform at the Whip In on Sunday. Celebrate our long-awaited reconciliation and drown your economic sorrows in one fell swoop! Yes, the Whip In is a liquor store, but it is so much more these days. A café, a green grocer, and a music venue! There is no cover, but donations from the show will benefit the excellent Groundwork Music Project.

Last but not least, what month would be complete without a performance of Spike Gillespie’s Dick Monologues? The ladies, the Rudy, and I return on Wednesday to the Hyde Park Theatre, where it all began two years ago. We had a fine run during FronteraFest last month, when the Chronicle noted, “With writing this smart and funny, delivery this engaging, and the vibe of a South Austin living room, you leave feeling pretty pleasured.” Find out more at dickmonologues.com. For tickets, email spike@spikeg.com. Bring friends!
