Southpaw’s Staycation

Yes, friends, tonight is the last appearance of Matt the Electrician & Southpaw Jones at Flipnotics until our return in September. The song title of the week is “Bruno.” 8:30 pm. $5 tips appreciated. We’ve had a great run lately, and nothing will fill that Hump Day Void, but everyone needs a summer break, you know? Matt is headed out on tour, and here’s how I plan to spend my staycation:

• Discuss the heat, its intensity and relentlessness, mostly with strangers.
• See if I can get arrested for disorderly conduct in my own home by a black cop.
• Scrape the barnacles off someone else’s boat. Pretend it’s mine.
• Solve crimes in a Hawaiian shirt.
• Perform a big show at the Cactus Café on Thursday, August 13.
• Get up. Stand up. Stand up for my rights.
• Take a nap in the air-conditioned comfort of a summer action movie.
• Gloss over failings. Emboss successes. Highlight interesting sections of Highlights Magazine.
• Develop pine-flavored daiquiri w/ cooling powers of ice and Christmas memories.
• Dress like a hobo for the job I have, not the one I want.

Of course, it’s too hot to accomplish most of these things, but now I can cross “Make Staycation To-Do List” off my to-do list, and we know from the butterfly effect that this small action might eventually end hunger and suffering the world. Maybe not this world, but some world.

I continue to gear up for my Left Handers Day solo show at the legendary Cactus Cafe on Thursday, August 13. I plan to have some new songs and unearthed old songs. Get those early requests in now! I set up a Facebook event page for the show, so you can help spread the word if you’re into that sort of thing.

Last weekend, I posted my new YouTube video of “My LOST Theme Song.” If you love the TV show, or just keytar, or just grainy images of me, check it out and share it. I’m not sure how much longer I can stand to look myself singing on a computer screen, but I’m trying to be young and hip and in motion for the greater good. Here’s the link:

And finally, it’s time to select a Song of the Week. I think with all the talk of reverse racism and Sotomayor and arresting Harvard scholars for no good reason, it’s time to dig out my “White Boy Blues” from The Southpaw Jones Starter Kit. I don’t have the lyrics posted yet, but you can hear a younger Southpaw lay it all down right here:

My LOST Theme Song

ABC had a contest for a LOST theme song to play at Comic-Con, so I wrote one, but then I found out they wanted all the rights. I couldn’t let go, so I didn’t enter, but I’m sharing it with you now. It features a keytar/kazoo combo that I hope you’ll find irresistible. Do share the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wBu6TBzZpA
(ABC, you can still use my song if you want, but I’m keeping the rights. Thanks. Love the show.)
