“The future does not belong to those who gather armies on a field of battle or bury missiles in the ground.”
President Barack Obama, calling on the U.S. and Russia to overcome Cold War mistrust and reduce nuclear arsenals, in his commencement speech before graduates of Moscow’s New Economic School.
In honor of this fine quote from last week, I nominate El Soldado as my Song of the Week. It’s from my latest record CRUELTY. You can listen, peruse the lyrics, and download right here: http://southpawjones.com/songs/cruelty/el-soldado/ Feel free to share the link with y’all’s chums.
Tonight, you know, Matt the Electrician and I will acoustically rock Flipnotics, starting at 8:30 pm. The song title challenge of the week is “Emergency Christmas.” More seasonal than Mrs. Dash!
Austinites, please mark Thursday, August 13 on your calendar. Not only is it International Left Handers Day 2009, it is the date of my next big solo show at the Cactus Cafe, my favorite venue. I will dress nice, shave my neck, and make it a night you shan’t forget!
Catch a bat in your mouth!

Happy New Half-Year, everyone. I hope 2009 will treat everyone better on its downhill slope. I’m going to try to treat my songs better by spotlighting one of them each week.
In honor of (spoiler alert) Michael Jackson‘s passing, I am sharing my most soulful, danceable number. And in response to Mark Sanford‘s refreshingly childish passion, I am posting a song about raw temptation. It’s called Man at Home, and it appears on my record Bedroom Demos Vol. 1: Zero Demand. I still haven’t figured out how to work it into my live set, but it’s embarrassing how much I enjoy listening to the recording.
Of course, I’ll join Matt the Electrician at Flipnotics tonight (and every Wednesday) at 8:30 pm. Our song title this week is “Bringing my Press Corps.” Yes, you read that correctly. Bring $5 if you have it, and we’ll all beat the heat with tunes.
Tomorrow, I’ll perform as part of the final Dick Monologues show. It’s been a super-fun and enlightening two year run, and I thank Spike Gillespie and the entire rotating cast for all the good times. Thursday’s show is very much sold out, so if you’ve missed the experience, you’ll just have wait for a revival.
That’s it for today. I hope you enjoy the sounds and lyrics of Man at Home at the following link. If you like it, feel free to buy it, and be sure to share with your friends, online and off:
