Tuesday & Wednesday & You

Oct 20th, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | no comment »

Friends, you can find me playing live two nights in a row starting tonight. It’s like a left-handed weekend right in the middle of the week!

Tuesday, 7 pm, I’ll appear outside at Jo’s Coffee downtown on 2nd, where Brian Kremer will join me with his electrified guitar and smooth vocals. The weather will be beautiful, the sliders are tasty, and they’ll have $2 Lone Star tallboys to quench your thirst. Come on out, and listen to the sounds of my voice float through the ravines of downtown like a melodic boy in a love balloon.

Wednesday, 8:30 pm, of course, I will once again hold down the fort at Flipnotics, another great venue where stimulants are available alongside depressants, and good times times flow with abandon ’cause vandals took the handle. This shall be the third of my October candidates for Best Show Ever, and I simply must top myself! The great Graham Wilkinson follows my set with his late show.

Both nights are free, but I welcome tips in the $5 range. Here are the details:

Evil Dead: The Ad

Oct 7th, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | no comment »

My sweet Maggie is about to perform brilliantly in a bloody production of Evil Dead: The Musical, and I can’t wait! It runs on weekends through October, and I placed an ad in the program to plug my solo shows at Flipnotics. Check it out:

Wednesdays @ Flipnotics

You should see Evil Dead: The Musical and my solo show, and fill yourself with culture like a petri dish. Sincere thanks to Mac Blake for illustrating and designing the ad. Hire him and make him rich!

Saturday night @ Whip In

Sep 12th, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | no comment »

Saturday, September 12, 2009
8:00pm
Whip In
1950 S. IH-35
Austin, TX 78704
512-442-5337

It’s a rainy day here in Austin, but that’s not going to stop me from sitting on a stump outside and composing this little message on an old laptop. I have a rare weekend show Saturday night at one my favorite spots in town. The food is great, the drinks are varied and rare, and the ambiance is unforgettable. It’s the Whip In, and I’ll start my solo show at 8 pm. There’s no cover, I’ll have my guitar, keytar, harps, and all the new songs I can remember. It’s the place to be!

Also, I have a few words from the legendary Spike Gillespie regarding a delicious Sunday morning event at which I’ll sing songs:

On Sunday, September 13th, I am hosting a little benefit for Dan at
BookPeople. We are calling this Dan-a-Palooza. Dan is a longtime employee at
BookPeople, a Kick Ass Award winner, and an all around superb human being.
He has had some serious health issues lately and– can you say hot topic–
he has no insurance.

I know these are tight times for everyone. I want to stress that, while we
are hoping to at least slightly defray Dan’s costs, an even bigger goal is
to lift his spirits with a big turnout.

I, along with several members of the Dick Monologues (including– yay–
Southpaw Jones) will be performing pieces about healthcare. We might even
have some surprise musical guests. Also, we’re making this a brunch– 11 til
1ish and we are providing all the food. So if you can swing a little
donation, you get tons of entertainment and lots of good food AND you get to
help out Dan.

I am hoping that attendees can make a minimum donation of $10, but there
will not be some big bouncer reinforcing this. If $10 is beyond your reach
but you still want to help– COME ON OUT anyway and throw what you can into
the hat. If you can’t make the event but want to donate anyway, please
email me and I’ll let you know how to do that.

It would help me very much if you would let me know if you plan on attending
so we can plan food accordingly. The event will be on the third floor.

Please pass this along to other interested parties.
Thanks,
Spike

Back to School Tonight!

Sep 2nd, 2009 Posted in Miscellany | no comment »

Back to bass-less rock school, that is. Matt the Electrician is back in town, which means my (working) summer vacation is over, which means we’ll return to Flipnotics this very evening!

We have both forgotten the song title of the week, and one of us may have forgotten how to play guitar and sing, but that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? You get to forget your troubles by watching us struggle, just like the first schoolyard fight of the semester.

We may only be handing out the syllabus and rambling about our professorial philosophy this first week back, but don’t you want to see what everyone is wearing? I know you do.

Bring five bucks if you have it, four if you’re poor, three if you’re coming back next week with more.

Twitter Week – 2009-08-25

  • No one can break a $50 in this town? I just assumed the wealth of my dreams would bring slippery ease to this terrestrial one-act. Wrong. #
  • Say what you will about parking garages. They've got great acoustics for humming Del Amitri tunes on a Friday. #
  • @oh_steph Hipsters make me feel old. I use the term negatively when they're walking too slow. If I like 'em, I say "guppy" or "go-getter." in reply to oh_steph #
  • I think I'll go buy a burger and a iPhone after work. #
  • God called me to despise Michele Bachmann this day. I dare not question His will. http://tinyurl.com/ldtvzr #
