Maggie and I had a great time visiting Dallas and Fort Worth over the weekend. Thanks to:
• Caffeine for making it all possible
• Everyone who came out to support the shows and buy CDs.
• Christin who housed and fed us
• Pascale and Jen at Opening Bell Mosaic
• Bearcats from far & wide
• The bartenders at The Ginger Man
• The cooks at Bread Winners for my salmon scramble
• The fine folks at Bill’s Records and whoever left a Springsteen bumper sticker in plain sight
• The obnoxious singing sandwich artists at Subway
• Robert, Mabel, Woody, and everyone at the Jefferson Freedom Café
• And the legendary Asylum Street Spankers for one hell of a good time
I hope to return soon! We returned to Austin at about 3 AM on Sunday morning, but we simply had to wake up and get moving in time to witness Mr. Rick Steves speak at Bookpeople. You may know him as a PBS travel host and author of Europe Through the Backdoor. We now know him to be an amazing speaker and thinker. He spoke at length to a standing room crowd about “Travel as Political Act.” I would summarize his message as “Other people do things in other ways, and that’s ok.” Think of how much we can learn from the world, if we just inject a little humility into our media, our politicians, and ourselves. Frankly, the world is progressively and quietly tip-toeing away from America, a sleeping giant with a penchant for violence, arrogance, and stubbornness. How I hope that we can turn the tide in 2009.
Sunday night, we went to a party celebrating the launch of vainaustin.com, where sweet Maggie gets her hair done up by superstar stylist Buffy Thomas. Maggie modeled for the site, and I simply must share the pics with you, because they and she are stunningly beautiful. Click the pic to see the full-size version if you can handle it.
