Halloween is tomorrow, so I’m posting the third song I recorded in 2006 for Austin’s legendary Soup Peddler. I gotta be honest, I had a pretty good time digging it up and listening to it this morning.

Twice.

Enjoy, and tell your friends who’s comin’!

Free Listen: Sometimes I Forget

My dear friend Bill Passalacqua posted the following on his blog over the weekend:

My buddy and one of my favorite songwriters Southpaw Jones has a song on his new CD (CRUELTY) called “Sometimes I Forget.” After watching the new McCain ad “Storm,” I thought of what a prescient song it is. And quirky and smart and funny. That’s Southpaw Jones.

Thanks for being a booster, Bill!

Speaking of fear and such, I found out about a study last month that claims the following: “Those with ‘markedly lower physical sensitivity to sudden noises and threatening visual images’ tended to support liberal positions, while those with strong responses tended to be more conservative.”

You gotta let that sink in for a minute.

It kind of makes sense, doesn’t it? Conservatives simply respond more to fear than liberals. And they’re supposed to be the tough guys! I mean, without fear, where would the right wing of this country be? What would the McCain campaign look like if they didn’t rely so heavily on the crutch of suspicion, innuendo, and fear-mongering?

I decided to post “Sometimes I Forget” in preparation for Election Day 2008. You can purchase the tune on iTunes, Amazon, or as part of my latest CD, CRUELTY. Matt the Electrician and Seela back me up on the track.

Parental discretion is advised.

Sometimes I Forget

Sometimes I forget that Magic Johnson
Is infected with the deadly virus known as HIV
As I pin him to the wall and make sweet love to him
Right after we been drinkin’
These days all I hear about is
How he owns a sports team and some movie theaters
So like an unfettered tiger, I ravage him
Without even blinkin’

Sometimes I forget to be afraid
Sometimes I forget to be afraid
And if you’d stop reminding me
I’d have it made
Sometimes I forget to be afraid

Sometimes I forget that two space shuttles
Have exploded, and one became a furnace on the launch pad
As I’m drinking Tang and checking meters
Halfway to a planet we call Mars
Sure, the thought of speeding comets
And that one guy’s glove
Makes it hard to sleep sometimes
But the thought of crashing through Uranus
Always makes me giggle and press on

Sometimes I forget to be afraid…

Sometimes I forget that those two towers fell
When planes collided with them on a day called 9/11
As I’m eatin’ peanuts, reading Skymall
On a one-way flight to old New York
No, I do not fear the harbor or the anthrax
Or the crime rate or the Broadway shows
Look at me, I just might be the biggest infidel
That town has ever seen

Sometimes I forget to be afraid…

It’s these times when I forget
That grace and glory swirl around me
In a dust storm
And I sail upon El Niño with my dream tucked
Like a broom between my thighs
And no government, no terrorist
Could make me feel one ounce of apprehension
As I pray for the lost ones who sit at home
Choking on the lies

Sometimes I forget to be afraid…

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Oh, Four.

Here we are, one week from Election Day 2008. I have already voted, because I’m a childless elitist with liberal time on my hands.

I decided to dig up my Ineffectual Election Song from 2004 to remind everyone how heartbreaking politics can be. If the Bush Presidency existed solely to lead us to an Obama Presidency, well, my adult life as an American will make a lot more sense.

Here’s the song as it appears on Bedroom Demos Vol. 1: Zero Demand.

PRESIDENT REACHES HALF-CENTURY POST
King Edward, Gov. Hughes, Archbishop Ireland, and Others Send Felicitations.
President Roosevelt to-day celebrated his fiftieth birthday. All day long a string of messenger boys bearing congratulatory messages, penned in many quarters of the globe, trooped to the White House. This and the steady line of express wagons that brought flowers and other presents alone made the day different from other workdays at the Executive office.

In one week, you can put an end to the politics that would divide a nation just to win an election; that tries to pit region against region, and city against town, Republican against Democrat; that asks us to fear at a time when we need hope,” he said. “As I’ve said from the day we began this journey all those months ago, the change we need isn’t just about new programs and policies. It’s about a new attitude. It’s about new politics — a politics that calls on our better angels instead of encouraging our worst instincts; one that reminds us of the obligations we have to ourselves and one another.

My sweet Maggie’s birthday was on Saturday. Happy birthday to her! We went to the lake. It was lovely.

In lieu of such, here’s an unreleased bedroom demo called Momentum.

Objects at rest tend to stay at rest
Objects in love might not even know
I’ve been tracking our conversations
I’ve been noticing sweeter words
I’d like to build something with you

Our book begins with exposition’s glow
That middle half we’ll jot down as we go
Add in multiple happy endings
The peaceful dim of a denouement
I plan to highlight every word

Momentum
Exponential
Day after day

Silence like this doesn’t come for cheap
We sit and stare and neither makes a peep
We’re not lacking in things to say
But at the end of an earthbound day
I’d rather fix my eyes on you

I stole a kiss thinking death was nigh
Hail and shrapnel flashing by
But I did not want to die
For the first time in a while

I draw a line from your chin to your chest
My mind plays games with good, better, and best
Better was she who came before
And good was the girl who cracked my door
And you are the best thing for me now
