My dear friend Bill Passalacqua posted the following on his blog over the weekend:
My buddy and one of my favorite songwriters Southpaw Jones has a song on his new CD (CRUELTY) called “Sometimes I Forget.” After watching the new McCain ad “Storm,” I thought of what a prescient song it is. And quirky and smart and funny. That’s Southpaw Jones.
Thanks for being a booster, Bill!
Speaking of fear and such, I found out about a study last month that claims the following: “Those with ‘markedly lower physical sensitivity to sudden noises and threatening visual images’ tended to support liberal positions, while those with strong responses tended to be more conservative.”
You gotta let that sink in for a minute.
It kind of makes sense, doesn’t it? Conservatives simply respond more to fear than liberals. And they’re supposed to be the tough guys! I mean, without fear, where would the right wing of this country be? What would the McCain campaign look like if they didn’t rely so heavily on the crutch of suspicion, innuendo, and fear-mongering?
I decided to post “Sometimes I Forget” in preparation for Election Day 2008. You can purchase the tune on iTunes, Amazon, or as part of my latest CD, CRUELTY. Matt the Electrician and Seela back me up on the track.

Sometimes I Forget
Sometimes I forget that Magic Johnson
Is infected with the deadly virus known as HIV
As I pin him to the wall and make sweet love to him
Right after we been drinkin’
These days all I hear about is
How he owns a sports team and some movie theaters
So like an unfettered tiger, I ravage him
Without even blinkin’
Sometimes I forget to be afraid
Sometimes I forget to be afraid
And if you’d stop reminding me
I’d have it made
Sometimes I forget to be afraid
Sometimes I forget that two space shuttles
Have exploded, and one became a furnace on the launch pad
As I’m drinking Tang and checking meters
Halfway to a planet we call Mars
Sure, the thought of speeding comets
And that one guy’s glove
Makes it hard to sleep sometimes
But the thought of crashing through Uranus
Always makes me giggle and press on
Sometimes I forget to be afraid…
Sometimes I forget that those two towers fell
When planes collided with them on a day called 9/11
As I’m eatin’ peanuts, reading Skymall
On a one-way flight to old New York
No, I do not fear the harbor or the anthrax
Or the crime rate or the Broadway shows
Look at me, I just might be the biggest infidel
That town has ever seen
Sometimes I forget to be afraid…
It’s these times when I forget
That grace and glory swirl around me
In a dust storm
And I sail upon El Niño with my dream tucked
Like a broom between my thighs
And no government, no terrorist
Could make me feel one ounce of apprehension
As I pray for the lost ones who sit at home
Choking on the lies
Sometimes I forget to be afraid…

I Am Beautiful Too: Slime Mold Rehabilitated

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
